Today’s Wordle answer (game #866)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #866) is… UNTIL.
I found UNTIL to be a lot easier to solve than it is to define in a clue; some words really don’t lend themselves to a helpful-but-not-entirely-giveaway hint. But enough of my problems, because the more important fact is that this is another straightforward Wordle answer.
WordleBot, the NYT’s ever-helpful game-droid, says it has an average score of 3.6, which is the same as yesterday’s NOISE (see below). Like that game, it has five common letters, but with one in particular being out of position for Wordle. Yesterday that letter was S (which is usually at the start of an answer), today it is U, which is only the 20th most common starting letter. There are in fact a mere 33 solutions out of the original 2,309 that begin with it – meaning you’d only expect to see one every 70 games. However, we had one only 20 days ago with UNCLE, so this was way ahead of schedule.
It is of course quite a common letter overall (11th) and is included in two of the most popular starting words, ADIEU and AUDIO. That doubtless contributed to a decent result for ADIEU (30 answers remaining) and an excellent one for AUDIO (10).
Neither are actually among the best Wordle starting words, and a couple of those were even more successful; SLANT left two answers and LEANT just one!
My opener, STARE, was not so lucky, leaving 119 options. I followed up with TOUCH, which was “a terrific choice” according to WordleBot, but which still left 11 remaining answers. Yes, that’s a drastic reduction from 119, but 11 is far too many for me to have had much chance of a 3/6 today.
I did try, though. BUILT was one of the options I identified, along with GUILT, QUILT, NUTTY, PUTTY, UNTIL, UNLIT and UNFIT. Others that WordleBot found were UNITY, INPUT and GUTTY. Why did I pick BUILT out of those? Honestly, I was in a rush and just decided to guess something! It’s not something I regularly do, but sometimes there are just too many things to do and not enough time to do them in, and today was one of those days.
This could have backfired – if things had gone badly I might have faced a three-way choice for my fourth guess, and could have ended up with a 6/6. What I should have done instead was to have played a word that couldn’t have been right, but that would have guaranteed a 4/6 score; WordleBot suggested FLING.
Still, I got lucky with BUILT because though it wasn’t right it left me only one remaining answer, which was UNTIL. I played that next for my 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #865)
In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #865, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.

N is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Only 37 games begin with it and it ranks just 18th in this regard.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #865)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #865) was… NOISE.
November is off to a nice, easy start with a puzzle that WordleBot says people are solving in an average of only 3.5 guesses. Just two Wordles in October were easier, and this actually scrapes into the top 20 easiest games so far in 2023 (equal with a bunch of others that also had a 3.5 average).
Why so simple? Well, obviously it will depend on various factors, but the biggest one is that the five letters that make up this word are all incredibly common. E is the most common overall (and also most common at the end of an answer), while the other two vowels rank 4th and 7th respectively. S, meanwhile, ranks 8th and N ranks 9th. No K or W or even an M or G to complicate things slightly.
Another factor is that a couple of the best Wordle starting words really cut down the answers here. Specifically, a couple of very popular ones that I don’t talk about very much. RAISE is only the 42nd best starter word, according to WordleBot, while ARISE is 87th, but they are regularly among the top choices actually played by people. Today, for instance, 4% began with RAISE and 2% with ARISE; only ADIEU, AUDIO, STARE and SLATE were more popular. And today, both left a mere three possible answers – compared to 32 for SLATE or 24 for STARE.
I imagine most RAISE/ARISE players will have scored a 3/6 today, then, and some will even have walked away with a 2/6, thus bringing down the average score.
For my part, I decided to follow up my opening STARE with CLOUD – a word that couldn’t be right but which was designed to eliminate as many options as possible by playing five extra common letters. And it worked. Though CLOUD only gave me a yellow O, by ruling out C, L, U and D I was left with only four remaining answers.
I will readily admit that I didn’t find them all, though. I spotted NOISE early on in my investigations and decided I’d probably play that. I also found POSSE, but that seemed like a less likely answer. The others, both of which I missed, were POISE and OBESE.
I didn’t have a guaranteed 3/6, then, but played NOISE with a certain amount of confidence and got lucky; it was indeed the answer, meaning I beat WordleBot (4/6) today.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
