Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #889)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #889) is… GUIDE.
Our run of easy Wordles continues with another answer that people are solving in fewer than four guesses. In fact, the average today according to WordleBot is a mere 3.4, making it even more simple than yesterday’s THROW (see below).
That doesn’t tell the whole story, though. Take a look at the letters in GUIDE and you’ll see that four of them feature in the word ADIEU, and three in AUDIO. These are two of the most popular first guesses (although neither is among the best Wordle starting words) and today both cut down the answers remarkably well. AUDIO left only three answers, while ADIEU reduced the options to one. Given that together they accounted for 12% of all starting words, that’s a lot of people who will have scored either a 2/6 or 3/6.
I don’t imagine other will find it much harder, because having three vowels in an answer tends to make it easier to solve, and neither G or D is exactly uncommon either. My own starting word – STARE – left 106 options, but I was still able to solve it in three, because there are no particular complications to make it harder; no repeated or uncommon letters, nor too many other words that have a similar format.
I did need some luck, though, and I got that with LINGO, my second guess. This gave me a yellow I and G to add to the green E and left me with only one remaining solution. That was GUIDE and I played that next for my 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #888)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #888) was… THROW.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been a little off my game lately. As you might have noticed, Black Friday deals are everywhere you look, and I’ve been busy finding big savings on everything from air fryers to OLED TVs. There’s no Wordle angle to it – it’s not like the New York Times is offering a price cut on a WordleBot subscription or anything – but it might go some way to explaining why I yet again scored a 4/6 on a day when the average is below that (3.7).
Then again, it could just be that I got unlucky. My opening guess of STARE left me with 48 possible solutions, whereas anyone starting with TRACE – another of the best Wordle starting words – had only 11 to sift through.
The task proved too tricky for me. PRINT was a decent guess but only cut that number to 12, and though I’d lucked-out on Wednesday with a 1-in-26 shot at PIXEL, I had to settle for a more modest return today. I could see that with the T having been ruled out at the end of the word it was likely to instead start it. The options I came up with included THROB, THROW, TORCH, TUMOR, TUTOR and TURBO, although I also had a couple with the T in the middle: MOTOR and ROTOR, plus FORTH and WORTH. I missed THRUM and FORTY.
I was going to play TORCH, but the fact that B featured in both THROB and TURBO pointed me towards that instead. So I went with THROB and for a second thought I’d guessed correctly – but no, the final letter stayed gray, so I had to play THROW next for a 4/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
