Today’s Wordle answer (game #738)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #738) is… ABOUT.
This is about as easy as Wordle ever gets. WordleBot, the NYT’s ever-helpful AI tool, says people are solving it in an average of 3.5 guesses, and there’s really nothing to be concerned about here. Four of the five letters are common, with B the outlier; it’s only the 18th most frequently used letter in the game. But with three vowels and a T to also uncover, this shouldn’t have proved too tricky.
None of the best Wordle starting words were particularly helpful today – SLANT left 30, which was the best of the top choices – but the two most popular picks were incredibly successful. These are ADIEU (11) and AUDIO (3), and I separate them from the best options because there is a difference. ADIEU and AUDIO are not, typically, as helpful as the likes of SLATE and CRANE, but occasionally of course they do come up trumps – and today was one of those days.
My pick, STARE, fared nowhere near as well – it gave me a yellow A and yellow T, and left me with 87 possible solutions. No matter. I knew that the T was very likely at the end of the answer, and that the A was most common in the second slot, so I built my second guess around that. PAINT fit the bill nicely, not least because it also included another vowel, in the form of I.
This confirmed the location of the T, but not the A, which could still go at the start or the end of the answer. There aren’t many words that end AT, but those that were still open to me included FLOAT, BLOAT and GLOAT – so getting an O in there made sense.
There were more answers that began with an A, though: ABBOT, ABOUT, AFOOT, ADULT and ALOFT were the ones I found; WordleBot told me afterwards that I could also have gone for ALLOT.
Looking at that list, going for a word with an L in would have made sense – ALOFT, maybe, as that also had an O. But B also featured three times (in ABOUT, ABBOT and BLOAT), so I went with that instead and chose the most common word in the list: ABOUT.
And, lo and behold, I guessed correctly – a 1/10 chance and a welcome 3/6 that owed quite a lot to luck.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #737)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #737) was… GUEST.
Ho, hum, humdrum. I’m not a massive fan of Wordles like this – standard words without any complications be they repeated letters, uncommon letters, uncommon spellings, awkward words or what have you. There are a lot of everyday words in Wordle, of course, so it’s understandable that they crop up regularly; it’s always a slight disappointment all the same. Give me a KAZOO or SHYLY or ENNUI over FROST, GRAND or GUEST any day!
Still, it’s a Wordle word and it’s not entirely without merit by any means. The GU opening combination is relatively uncommon – there are only 16 of these. In fact, there are fewer than half of these than there are ST combos at the end of a Wordle answer (36). And it does have a few near cousins with a similar word format; that might have thrown you off a bit. It all adds up to an average score of 3.9; as I said, pretty standard.
My opening guess was STARE, as always, because it’s one of the best Wordle starting words. Today it performed very nicely, leaving me with just 18 possible solutions – less than SLATE (19), CRANE (275), SLANT (34), TRACE (86) and CARTE (102), but not as low as LEAST (a mere six).
Some of the words I identified ended in EST – for instance QUEST, CHEST and GUEST – but I also had some that were IST (EXIST, HEIST) and quite a few that ended SET (BESET, UPSET, INSET, ONSET).
Nonetheless, I decided to go for CHEST because I was in a hurry to play and figured it would at least tell me what the ending was. And I got lucky: the E, S and T all turned green, meaning I was on the right lines. That left me just two possibles: QUEST and GUEST. A 4/6 was therefore the worst I could do, but I had another dose of luck when GUEST proved to be correct for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
