G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It’s often paired with an L to make GL— – but I’m not revealing whether that’s the case today.

• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #735)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #735) is… GRAND.
We’re firmly in standard Wordle territory here. WordleBot says this puzzle has an average score of 3.8 and there are no major complications to it. It’s simply a common five-letter word made up of common letters; your only real challenge is to narrow them down and put them in order.
That’s true of all Wordle words to an extent, of course, but GRAND is a pretty basic example. There are no repeated letters, for instance, and not even any uncommon ones such as the V in yesterday’s COVET (see below).
What’s more, some of the best Wordle starting words will have given you a head start. CRANE left just seven possible solutions – although I suspect slightly fewer people will be beginning with that word after it was the answer on Wednesday. SLANT left 10 options and LEANT 12, although my pick, STARE, was higher at 32.
Fortunately, I got very lucky with my second guess. I’d decided that this was probably going to be a word with the format -RA–, so I left both the R and A out of my second guess and played CLING instead. This worked wonderfully well, giving me a green N and a yellow G. What’s more, this G could only now go in two positions, meaning I had either GRAN-, G-ANR, -GANR or RGAN- and given that the latter three of those options didn’t make sense, I was left with GRAND as my only viable guess.
I went with that next and scored a straightforward 3/6 on a straightforward Wordle day.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #734)

- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer really wants something.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #734)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #734) was… COVET.
I wouldn’t describe today’s answer as the most difficult we’ve ever had, but I don’t suspect there will be many 2/6s today (and almost certainly no 1/6s unless people cheat).
For a start, it contains a V in the middle; V is the fifth least common letter in the Wordle alphabet, ahead of only Z, X, Q and J, so I wouldn’t imagine it would feature in too many starting words.
Plus, COVET is not the most obvious word in the world. Sure, it’s a perfectly acceptable addition to the Wordle lexicography, but it’s not a common term in the way that TASTE or CRANE or FROST are. I will allow that it is a fair bit more common a word than KAZOO, though!
As always, I coveted a great score, but I didn’t quite get it today; I had to settle for a 4/6, only slightly ahead of the 4.1 that WordleBot says was the average across everyone that played it. Frankly, I can’t see how I could have done it in fewer guesses – well, not without a lot of luck.
As always, I started with STARE, my long-time favorite among the best Wordle starting words. This gave me a yellow T and a yellow E, which seemed decent enough, but when I began looking at options I realized there were a LOT to pick from. WordleBot said there were 90 of them, although I didn’t identify that many myself. But I had a few dozen; enough to know that I wasn’t going to be scoring a 2/6 at any rate.
The sensible thing to do was work out where the T and E went while adding another vowel and some more common consonants. I decided to go with TONED, because I thought T would be most likely at the start. That was silly, though, because T is actually more common at the end of a Wordle answer – something I’m well aware of having played this game for about 18 months now.
Still, TONED did give me a green O and placed the E too. Plus, I now knew the T could only go in one of two positions, the middle or the end.
According to WordleBot, I now had four remaining options: HOTEL, MOTEL, HOLIDAY INN, COVET and COMET. I only found three of these, though, missing the last one, and therefore decided that MOTEL was the best choice for my third guess. I was wrong about it being the answer, but it did the trick, ruling out COMET without me even knowing about it and leaving me with just COVET left. So, a 4/6 on a fairly tough day.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
