Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #975)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #975) is… PRICE.
I’m afraid I don’t have anything particularly interesting to say about today’s Wordle, because, well, it’s not particularly interesting.
Hang on, are you getting a touch of deja vu here? Don’t worry – I’ve just copy and pasted yesterday’s entry, because all of the same applies to today. Let’s continue.
It has five different letters with no repeats. None of them are very uncommon. The word itself is not particularly notable. The game’s average score – 3.7, WordleBot says – is fairly standard. Sorry, but that’s the way it is. There are more than 2,000 answers, after all – they can’t all be fascinating, knuckle-clenching rollercoasters.
Actually, I do have one correction to the above – yesterday’s score was revised upwards to 3.8, whereas today’s currently sits at 3.6. So, in short, it’s just like yesterday’s but even easier. Wonderful.
The fact that it has a lower score is mostly due to the fact that some of the best Wordle starting words performed very well today. TRACE, WordleBot’s favorite opener these days, left only one answer and therefore a guaranteed 2/6 unless you really messed up. CRANE, WordleBot’s second pick, left three. CRATE was another one that left only one. PLACE another that left three. Some people will be very happy this morning.
In contrast, I’ve made life harder for myself by starting with a different random word each day, and today the fates served up CANAL for me. This was not a disaster by any means, but it’s always frustrating to get a repeated letter first up.
Anyway, CANAL gave me a yellow C and left 118 answers. I didn’t know the latter detail at that stage, but could see there were many options to pick from, so simply tried to gain some more information on my second guess.
The sensible thing to do was to play the next two most common vowels – E and O – plus the two most common remaining consonants. However, they were R and T, and I couldn’t see a way to get them both in: TROCE isn’t a word, for instance. What I should have done was played TRICE – and I would then have had a nice easy solve on the next go. However, I always prefer playing an O before an I if possible, so I went with SCORE instead.
This was decent, without being quite as helpful as TRICE would have been; it left me three answers. The good news was that it was easy to find them all: TRICE, TRUCE and PRICE.
I couldn’t recall any having been past Wordle answers, but if my memory was better I’d have remembered that TRICE was the solution in September 2022 (game #457). Instead, I played that next to cover off both remaining answers, so although it was wrong I had a guaranteed 4/6 with PRICE on the next guess.

R is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Despite ranking third overall in Wordle, it’s merely the 11th most likely to begin an answer.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #974) was… RIDGE.
I’m afraid I don’t have anything particularly interesting to say about today’s Wordle, because, well, it’s not particularly interesting.
It has five different letters with no repeats. None of them are very uncommon. The word itself is not particularly notable. The game’s average score – 3.7, WordleBot says – is fairly standard. Sorry, but that’s the way it is. There are more than 2,000 answers, after all – they can’t all be fascinating, knuckle-clenching rollercoasters.
My game was probably made more interesting than it could have been thanks to my random start word. That was SWATH today, which gave me zero letters and left me with 839 possible solutions. Oops! But on the plus side, that did mean I had to work harder to solve it.
In contrast, most of the top 20 best Wordle starting words cut down the numbers by a far greater amount, although only one of them, TRADE, made it into single figures. That word left only two options, but most – for instance TRACE (42) and CRANE (46) – were in the 20-100 range.
Faced with a blank board for my second guess I took the easy option and played some of the most common letters open to me, in the form of CLONE. I nearly went for CRONE, and would come to regret the decision to include an L rather than an R as the game went on.
CLONE was a good choice all the same, but unlucky in that all it gave me was a single green E. WordleBot told me afterwards that I now had 35 answers remaining, and though I didn’t know that at the time I could see that I had at least a dozen options: BUDGE, BRIDE, BRIBE, DRIVE, PRIDE, PRIZE, PRIME, GUIDE, MERGE, GRIPE, RIDGE and DIRGE.
I didn’t spend time trying to find more, but instead played GRUMP – because it contained lots of letters that were common to those 12 words. Amazingly, this was exactly what WordleBot said it would have played. And finally it proved a little more lucky, giving me a yellow G and R to go with that green E.
I could now find three possible answers: RIDGE, DIRGE and VERGE. But I knew VERGE had been a past Wordle answer (only a couple of weeks ago), so ruled that out and guessed RIDGE as the more likely answer. My hunch proved to be correct and I escaped a tough game (for me) with a 4/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
