Docs show Amazon planned to open dozens of cashierless Go stores this year — what’s the holdup?

Since opening the first cashier-less Amazon Go convenience store in Seattle almost three years ago, Amazon has continued to open new Go stores in a few additional cities. But if you’re wondering why there aren’t any such stores near you, it might be that Amazon isn’t sticking to its original plan to spread them across the country.

According to documents from 2018 viewed by The Information, Amazon planned to open 56 Go stores by the end of this year and 156 by the end of 2020, but so far it has only announced 18. Just 14 of those are open to the public and are only located in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle. Since the documents reviewed by The Information are reportedly from last April, it’s really hard to say why…
