New Prime Video movies: the best films to stream in February 2024

Get Out

Release date: February 1

Jordan Peele’s feature film directing debut is a masterclass in subverting expectations of tired old horror tropes and reinventing the genre as a whole.

The psychological horror flick stars Daniel Kaluuya (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Judas and the Black Messiah) as Chris, a young Black man who agrees to spend the weekend at his white girlfriend’s well-off family’s home. However, soon after their arrival, Chris notices some weird goings-on at the residence, and it isn’t long before he unearths some shocking secrets about them.

A funny, frightening, and extraordinarily thought-provoking movie with layers of social commentary, Get Out is more than deserving of a highlights spot on our new Prime Video movies list.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Release date: February 1

Edgar Wright’s live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved comic book series was as faithful a movie as Scott Pilgrim fans could have hoped for. The 2010 video game-inspired flick brought O’Malley’s graphic novels to life in a pleasingly stylized and authentic manner, with numerous scenes near-identical copies to those on the page. Oh, and its absolutely stacked cast – including many actors who have gone on to become A-listers, such as Marvel duo Chris Evans and Brie Larson – knocked it out of the park from character perspectives.

The deviations from the source material in its latter half left something to be desired – Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was released before O’Malley’s final book was, hence the changes. As an overall package, though, it’s a fantastic film adaptation that deserves more than its cult classic status. A reimagined Netflix animated series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, is also worth watching.

Bottoms

Release date: February 13

This satirical teen comedy was one of 2023’s best movies (in our view, anyway) and, with Bottoms now available on Prime Video, it’s a must-see film if you missed it during its theatrical run. Rachel Sennott (Bodies Bodies Bodies) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) play PJ and Josie, high school best friends who start a fight club in a bid to meet girls and lose their virginity.

With its subversive and wildly entertaining take on college-based raunchy comedies, Bottoms walks a pleasing fine line between sardonic and violent slapstick. It also isn’t afraid to dive into the deep end with its exploration of female friendship, queerness, and more sensitive topics; social commentaries that set it apart from early 2000s teen comedies like Superbad and American Pie

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

Release date: February 13

Mission: Impossible 5 finally makes the death-defying leap onto Prime Video to join its franchise brethren (sans Ghost Protocol and Mission: Impossible 7, that is) this month. The first film to be helmed by the action movie series’ now-established director Chris McQuarrie, the fifth Mission: Impossible flick sees Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt – obvious as it is to say – go rogue to fight The Syndicate, a black ops terrorist organization.

The third best-rated Mission: Impossible movie, according to Rotten Tomatoes critics, Rogue Nation is a pulsating thrill ride of an action-spy film that is necessary viewing. Stick it on your new Prime Video movies watchlist ASAP.

This is Me… Now: A Love Story

Release date: February 16

Billed as a “narrative-driven cinematic original” from pop superstar Jennifer Lopez (also known as J-Lo), This Is Me… Now: A Love Story is a genre-bending Amazon original that’ll sit alongside This Is Me… Now, J-Lo’s first studio album in a decade, which releases on the same date.

Starring huge names from across the entertainment industry, including Sofia Vergara, Trevor Noah, Post Malone, Keke Palmer, Jay Shetty, and Derek Hough, A Love Story seems like it’ll be J-Lo’s attempt to deliver an unmissable multimedia event for her adoring fans. Expect plenty of breakneck and breathless dance choreography, elaborate costumes, and a lyric-based peak behind the curtain of Lopez’s private life.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Release date: February 21

The second film in our new Prime Video movies spotlight section that stars Edibiri and featured in our best movies of 2023 list, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is a wonderfully constructed animated film that reinvents the iconic pizza-chomping humanoid amphibians for the modern age.

Mutant Mayhem follows the titular group – comprising Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo – as they embark on their first real-world mission to track down a mysterious crime syndicate and face an army of fellow mutants. Along the way, they meet burgeoning journalist April O’Neal (Edibiri), the only human who accepts them for who they are and reports their various escapades.

A hilarious and incredibly heartfelt take on the Ninja Turtles that extensively explores the teenage element of the quartet for the first time on the big screen, Mutant Mayhem is a visually impressive, animated treat that eschews the franchise’s tired tropes in favor of a tale about acceptance, family, and conformity. One to look out for on our best Prime Video movies list (NB: it’s also available on Paramount Plus) soon.
