Apple’s new iPhone 12 comes with a ceramic-hardened display

Apple is taking the wraps off its new iPhone 12 lineup today, and a standout feature of the new iPhone 12 is a ceramic-hardened display named Ceramic Shield. Apple says the use of glass-ceramic in the phone’s design makes it more drop-resistant and harder to scratch than ever before, with four times greater resistance for drops.

Apple isn’t the first to incorporate glass-ceramic into its smartphones. This is a material that is tough, lightweight, and “virtually impervious to heat and electricity” (according to glass-ceramic manufacturer Corning). The Essential Phone, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix series, and Samsung’s Galaxy S10 Plus all had ceramic panels on the rear (optional on the Galaxy), but Apple has differentiated itself by using the material…
